Woods’ name was scrubbed from the top fifty of the Rankings, during December, but a dramatic victory at the Chevron World Challenge, in which he defeated Zach Johnson at the final hole, helped catapult the Californian to no.21. The triumph was his first trophy in two years. “It feels awesome”, Woods said, at the time.

The 14-time Major hero will play in the Abu Dhabi Championship, later this week, in a bid to improve his ranking before the start of the Masters Tournament, in April. He will be joined by current no.1, Luke Donald, as well as Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, and three-time Championship winner, Martin Kaymer. “I’m looking forward to testing my game against a very strong field”, Woods said, of his opponents. “I’m very excited to get going.”

Woods’ schedule for early 2012 is a marked departure from previous years. He typically begins his season at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego. However, the Abu Dhabi is a richer tournament, offering a greater rankings boost to the ultimate victor – and Woods needs all the points he can get, if he hopes to launch an assault on the top-ten.

Tiger currently has 137.64 points to his name, compared to the 231.76 of Jason Day, in tenth position, and the 514.47 of England’s Donald, at the top of the pyramid. The numbers may appear bleak, at least for Woods’ chances of dethroning Donald, but the American can take both the Masters title and the no.1 spot simultaneously, if he secures victory at the Abu Dhabi, and then wins at Augusta.

Scottish golfer, Colin Montgomerie, believes that a Woods’ victory at the Masters, in April, would be “the best story for golf”, a sentiment that many of his long-suffering fans will no doubt share. Monty added that Woods or McIlroy are his picks for the no.1 slot by the end of 2012.

The world number 28 has seen his stock in world golf rise thanks to six European Tour titles in the last five years and in 2012 he has the luxury of knowing he has already qualified automatically to compete in all four majors – the Masters, the US Open, The Open and the USPGA Championship.

The 34-year-old achieved his best Major finish at the Open last year, his ninth-place finish ensuring he was the highest-placed Englishman in the field and convincing him personally he was good enough to compete for the top titles in world golf. Those who bet on golf should remember this.

In 2011 Dyson won the Irish Open and the KLM Dutch Open and that success has left the Brit confident of earning more wins this year, while he kicks off his 2012 campaign in the Volvo Championship in South Africa before heading to the Abu Dhabi Championship.

Dyson has told the York Press he is looking ahead to the links course at Lytham St Anne’s to give him his best shot of lifting a Major title this year and the golf betting reflects this.

He said: “I’d love to win a major. But I think that if I am going to win one, then The Open will be my best chance. Out of the four I think it would be that one I could win.

“The Open and the courses it is played at suit my game better. And if you get that little bit of luck then who knows what might happen.”

Dyson could also be aiming to get a place in the European Ryder Cup team if he has a successful 2012 campaign, with the tournament taking place at Medinah Country Club in Illinois at the end of September.
